Hirudotherapy is an ancient and at the same time modern method of healing using medicinal leeches.
Hirudotherapy – natural healing with leeches.
During the procedure, the leech secretes a unique complex of enzymes and biologically active substances that initiate the body's cleansing and restoration processes.
The main goal of hirudotherapy – improving blood quality. Blood - this is the basis of health.
If the blood flow becomes viscous, dirty and slow, it leads to:
- high blood pressure,
- varicose veins,
- hemorrhoids,
- headaches and vascular spasms,
- oxygen starvation of the heart and cells.
Only clean and fluid blood can carry sufficient oxygen, nutrients, and energy to organs and tissues, so the functioning of all organs directly depends on the quality of the blood.
Hirudotherapy gently and naturally solves this problem, helping the body restore balance and health from the inside.
A Brief History of Hirudotherapy
Hirudotherapy has been known to humanity since ancient times. The first mentions of leech therapy date back over 3,000 years in medical treatises from India, Egypt, China, and Greece.
- In Ancient Egypt, leeches were used to purify the blood and maintain vitality.
- Hippocrates and Avicenna recommended leeches for the treatment of many diseases.
- In 19th century Europe, hirudotherapy was one of the most widespread healing methods.
Quotes from famous people:
- Avicenna (980–1037): «The leech cleanses the body of spoiled blood and restores the balance of forces.».
- Nikolay Pirogov, the great Russian surgeon (1810–1881): «Leeches are a medicine that nature has given to man to save life.».
Today, hirudotherapy is experiencing a new stage of development: ancient practice harmoniously combines with modern medical knowledge.

Medicinal leech enzymes and their effects
The secretion of the salivary glands of the medicinal leech contains more than 100 biologically active substances. They have a multifaceted healing effect on the body.
Key enzymes and their effects:
- Hirudin – prevents thrombus formation, thins the blood, improves its fluidity.
- Hyaluronidase - "penetration enzyme", helps active substances spread faster through tissues, promotes the resorption of adhesions and edema.
- Bdellins and Eglins – have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
- Orgelaza – stimulates the formation of new capillaries and improves microcirculation.
- Apiraza – thins the blood, reduces the load on the heart and blood vessels.
- Destabilase – promotes the dissolution of blood clots and improves tissue nutrition.

Recovery after physical and emotional stress
The enzymes secreted by leeches thin the blood, improve metabolism, and promote faster recovery from stress, exercise, and fatigue.
Prevention of cardiovascular diseases
Men are more prone to hypertension, thrombosis, and vascular problems. Hirudotherapy reduces blood viscosity, improves its flow, and strengthens blood vessels, which has a positive effect on overall health.
Cardiovascular diseases
Blood thinning
Leech saliva enzymes prevent the formation of blood clots and make the blood more fluid, which facilitates the work of the heart and improves the supply of oxygen to the organs.
Reducing pressure
By improving microcirculation and having a relaxing effect, hirudotherapy helps to gently lower blood pressure.
Improving blood flow
Congestion is relieved, blood circulates better through the capillaries, which is especially important for cerebrovascular accidents, headaches, and dizziness.
Prevention of heart attacks and strokes
Regular courses of hirudotherapy reduce the risk of blood clots and vascular occlusion.
Recovery from illnesses
Hirudotherapy can be used as part of a comprehensive treatment after a heart attack, stroke, or thrombophlebitis, helping to quickly restore strength.
After injuries and surgeries
Removing swelling
Leeches improve microcirculation and lymph flow, which helps remove excess fluid more quickly and reduces swelling.
UAcceleration of tissue healing
The enzymes in leech saliva have anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties, promoting rapid healing of sutures and soft tissues.
Improving blood supply to the injury area
Activating blood flow helps tissues receive more oxygen and nutrients, which speeds up recovery.
Prevention of adhesions and coarse scars
Hirudotherapy promotes gentle resorption of connective tissue, preventing the formation of dense scars and adhesions.
Pain reduction
The biologically active substances of leeches have a mild analgesic effect, reducing discomfort after surgery and injuries.
Children's health
Improving cerebral circulation

- Turkish surgeons and rehabilitation specialists share their experience using leeches for varicose veins and chronic wounds where traditional healing methods have failed.
- At international forums on traditional medicine, doctors from Europe and Asia note a reduction in depression and improved sleep and memory in patients after courses of hirudotherapy.
This exchange of experience demonstrates that the method works in a wide variety of countries and cultures. And while scientists continue their research, practitioners are already seeing real improvements in people with neurological, vascular, and chronic diseases.
How is treatment with medicinal leeches carried out?
Treatment begins with an initial consultation, during which I collect a detailed medical history, listen to your complaints, and assess your overall health. We then develop a personalized treatment plan.
The initial course includes approximately 12 sessions - held once or twice a week depending on the patient’s condition and availability. For the course, 30 medical leechesare pre-ordered and used exclusively for one person. The cost of one leech is approximately 8,50 €.
Each session lasts about 1 hour and costs 30 €. During the session, I:
- determine the individual leech placement scheme;
- combine elements of homeopathic principles and Eastern healing techniquesto make the therapy as gentle and harmonious as possible;
- provide lifestyle, nutrition, and recovery recommendations to support the healing process in a holistic way.
We are working gently, Avoid sudden exertion to avoid allergic reactions or severe aggravation. Local reactions are sometimes possible, including increased skin temperature at the site of application and a feeling of soreness. This is a natural part of the cleansing process through the lymphatic system.
After the session, I carefully bandage the wounds, and the patient changes the bandage again at home—after this, the bleeding usually stops completely. Feel free to contact me with any questions throughout the course.
After the basic course we move on to the "problem-based" statements:
- with varicose veins,
- endocrine disorders,
- diseases of the joints, spine,
- other individual requests.
This approach allows you to first cleanse and prepare the body, and then work on specific problems.
Contraindications
Although hirudotherapy is safe when used correctly, the method has a number of contraindications.
Treatment is not recommended for:
- hemophilia and other bleeding disorders,
- severe anemia,
- oncological diseases in the active phase,
In all other cases, hirudotherapy can be an effective and gentle method of healing, recovery and prevention.
